This class is a combined lecture, demonstration, and practical try-out of the decorative elements found on the Skjoldehamn find. The find consists of a very elaborately decorated wool outfit in multiple layers, two tunics, a pair of pants, socks, leg wraps, shoes, a braided belt and a hood.

The class will explain all of the different techniques used for the decoration (those being two types of embroidery, five different braids, two woven bands and a few other miscellaneous things) and how they were used in the find.

I will also show how I personally interpreted the sources I’ve found and how I did when I reconstructed the different parts, what worked for me and what didn’t.

Then there will be time to try out some of the techniques if you are interested in making your own or just trying out! I’ll include diagrams and descriptions for how I did the different braids and embroidery in a hand-out so you can try it out on your own as well!

What should I bring?

Bring your own yarn for trying out the techniques if you want a specific color.

Who is the host?

Lucie Frÿgin from Gyllengran, Nordmark.

In the SCA I do a lot of things, but I mostly focus on sewing and scribe-stuff. I love making as much of my kit as I can myself, which often leads to picking up a lot of other crafts as well.

Last year I challenged myself with making a reconstruction of the Skjolehamn find after putting it off for a year. I put this project on hold to finish my gápttie (sámi traditional dress) first so that I had more knowledge to apply when doing my own analysis and interpretation of this find. My sámi identity is a very big part of my life now and it is something I love to share my knowledge about and discuss, which is why this find in particular is very important to me.
